Deer Management History

In 1999 a resident survey favored a deer management plan 6 to 1.  The result was a campaign to encourage residents to stop feeding deer corn, as it is not nutritional and draws deer further into residential areas.  Beginning in 2000 the HSB Property Owners’ Board spent two years studying our deer management problems, talking to nearby communities and consulting experts.  In April 2002 a community deer management meeting was held.  Eight speakers shared their views on deer management and a deer management committee was formed.  The survey was repeated at this meeting, with 100% of those attending favoring a deer management plan.  The HSB POA constructed an eight-foot perimeter barrier fence along a highly traveled route on the western border of HSB West.  Since 2003 Horseshoe Bay has coordinated with Texas Parks and Wildlife to trap and remove deer from the area. The plan is not to eliminate deer from Horseshoe Bay, but to reduce the population of the herd to natural numbers according to Texas Parks and Wildlife guidelines.
