PRESS RELEASE

HSB MAYOR AND COUNCIL - MOVING FORWARD

Your Council conducted their first workshop Tuesday, November 29. Mayor Lambert called the meeting to order at 1:00 p.m. and requested (and was granted) a motion to adjourn at 5:30 p.m. Twenty seven items were on the agenda and the Council addressed each one.

Jim Babcock gave his recommendations for the appointment of a Municipal Court Judge, selection of an interim City Attorney and discussed the preliminary stages of funding and budgetary preparation.

The merger of the MUD and the city is a critical issue and prompted a great deal of discussion. The MUD Board has already spent long hours on this issue and Councilman Don Wood brings 6 ½ years of experience as a MUD Board Member to the Council. We thank the MUD Board for their selfless efforts.

The initiation of a Hotel/Motel Occupancy Tax was a major issue. Karen Wines has done extensive research on the issue and the Council hopes to implement this by the first of the year. The tax will provide substantial revenue to our community.

John Bird led the discussion on several agenda items that have been administered by the County and are now under the umbrella of the city. He will be working with Commissioner Wayne Brascom, developers and property owner associations to facilitate this transfer.

The subject of ordinances prompted a lengthy discussion. The Council is reviewing all the existing ordinances that have served the community well the past 34 years, and will be adding new ordinances. This will result in giving greater enforcement authority to our law officers.

Mayor Lambert asked Buddy Schrader to provide progress reports to the media and the Council website. The Council remains committed to serving the community in an open and accessible fashion.

HSB citizen John Robertson gave a presentation on the Council website. He developed the site and continues to perfect the format which will provide easy access to the Council and its activities.

Throughout the meeting, the Mayor and Council referred to the critical role of volunteers from the community. The spirit of HSB makes it a unique and exciting place to live. The Council is here to serve you and to foster and preserve that spirit. We want our citizens to be involved in their government and invite you to attend our meetings and access our website. The next Council meeting will be Tuesday, December 6, at 3:00 p.m., at the MUD office.
