[ARCHIVED] Annual Free Chlorine Conversion Completed

Effective October 29, 2021 - Annual Free Chlorine Conversion Completed

The City of Horseshoe Bay has completed the annual free chlorine conversion of its water distribution system which went into effect September 29, 2021.  Both water treatment plants have returned to the use of chloramines as the long-lasting disinfection of the drinking water.

Chloramines are created by combining chlorine and ammonia. During the annual free chlorine reversion event, the disinfection process was changed from chloramines to free chlorine.  Free chlorine is a stronger and faster-acting disinfectant used to ensure distribution pipes do not develop biofilm and produce nitrification.  During the chlorine conversion, fire hydrants were opened to allow flushing of the system to help remove sediment from the pipes and distribute the change in disinfectant.

Possible Noticeable Effects.   It is important to understand that upon the completion of the annual free chlorine conversion and return to the chloramines, residents may notice an elevated chlorine smell in the water and minor pressure fluctuations and small air pockets.  Fire hydrant flushing should remove most of the color and odor, but some may reach customers' lines during the process.

If you continue to experience air or discoloration, please contact the Utility Department at 830.613.0830.

Is the Water Safe to Drink?   Yes, the water has been safe to drink throughout the annual chlorine conversion process.  Any odor and color issues will be a nuisance only, which will subside as the flushing is completed.
