[ARCHIVED] Hard Freeze Advisory

Hard Freeze Expected by Thursday Morning including possible freezing precipitation

According to the National Weather Service forecast for our area, precautions should be taken to protect “pets, plants and pipes” as well as people when a freeze warning is issued in the area. Freeze warnings are issued by the National Weather Service Austin when the weather is expected to bring sub-freezing temperatures and the possibility of freezing precipitation to the area. Up-to-date information regarding the Winter Storm Watch may be found at the link below.

National Weather forecast for Austin/San Antonio National Weather Service: https://www.weather.gov/ewx/.

Widespread freezing during the nighttime hours is expected Thursday night through Monday morning. Temperatures can be as low as the mid-20s or lower during nighttime hours.

City crews are preparing for possible icing of our streets and will apply de-icing salt when necessary. All emergency services are prepared and ready to support the community.

Additional information will be provided by the city as this event develops.

Prepare to Protect Pipes, Plants, and Pets

Exposed pipes should be insulated from the cold by wrapping or left to drip when temperatures drop below 32 degrees for more than a couple of continuous hours. Piping in an uninsulated and non-heated building should be turned off and drained before temperatures drop below 32 degrees.

Call the Utilities Department if assistance is needed to turn off your service in the event of a broken pipe.    Dial (830) 598-8741 and follow prompts.

Plants, gardens, and flowerbeds should be covered to trap heat energy from the ground. Potted plants should be brought indoors. If relocation is not possible, wrapping pots with towels may help prevent roots from freezing.

Pets should be brought indoors before temperatures drop to 32 degrees. Check outside watering dishes that will freeze and provide fresh water as needed.

Please check in on your neighbors who may need assistance preparing for the hard freeze event.
